Cranes In Sunset by ladiespet Cranes In Sunset by ladiespet
Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Cranes stand against the dying light of the sun. Another new building rises up against the skyline in Rotterdam.

There seems to be a strange mist in the air. The sky is crossed by vapour trails from planes heading towards the North Sea.

I decided the original version of this that I uploaded was a bit messy so I've tried to tidy it up.

There's something I really love about sunset shots in an urban atmosphere  Yours is one of the best ones I've seen in a while.

I like the way the haze and smoke has dulled all the edges and left a very soft atmosphere, yet doesn't feel polluted - gritty and dirty perhaps, but aren't all big cities? :D That feeling is mimicked again in the soft hazy clouds.

The color is wonderful - the eye is instantly drawn to the sun as the brightest, most colorful thing in the composition but soon travels to marvel at all the small details, from the building windows to the tiny cars far below. Awesome shot :)

I got this printed out and it was a bit disappointingly murky looking instead of atmospheric. I might try again with a better quality printer (but that would be expensive).

Ahw that's a shame, but it could be the printer yes. On the net it looks very good!

Argh! No wonder it was murky! I uploaded a better deviation ages ago, but it doesn't automatically change the print!! I just realised it and fixed it - now the print and the deviation are the same file.

No worries, picture is awesome bro. And ya, apologies for the vernacular. i obviously need to get out of the 'the world revolves around me because i'm american' mindset and realize that there is a boatload of people on here who in fact aren't from america and tend to be more awesome than i. :p

I agree that there is a general US mindset that is quite inwardly focussed. On the other hand whenever I'm visiting somewhere fairly exotic, or somewhere that is opening up for business, guess who most of the foreigners are? Guys (and gals) from the U.S. of A!

I just thought I'd mention that for the sake of balance ;-)

That is amazing!! I love the composition, and from what I see looking at it, the vertical cloud line is a beautiful leading line. It sends you right into the heart of the picture.

Beautiful atmosphere, accented by the foggy haze.
The detail is amazing.

Thanks for the mini-critique. The vertical cloud line is really an aeroplane trail, the detail is because its made from about six overlapping photos stitched together. I didn't overlap very carefully or regularly so the stitching software coped very well.

Thanks. Yes, even though its in the middle of a large city, it was the effect of the mist and the sky making all the man-made structures look natural, that I was trying to get.
I was also trying to be a smart ass with the title (as though it was a picture of the type of Cranes that fly).

Yes for me it is sad to see those piles of smoking,
but if the picture is very characteristic.

Ah industry, progress :). though, better to see in a city than in the suburbs IMO (a city has already destroyed it's nature, whereas a suburb is a melding of both ;))

Also the Netherlands  never see pictures from the netherlands where I'm from, love this! I love Europe haha

great shot!

Progress indeed, we have to have it. Those are just the lift shafts that you see there. The actual building looks as though it's going to be an ugly concrete lump (it's still being built so I still hope it won't be).

Rotterdam has plenty good modern architecture that is functional as well as good looking. They had to rebuild because most of the centre was destroyed in WW II. I don't like to mention the war in case our German cousins get upset but our Dutch cousins here still ring bells every day to remember the bombing raid that destroyed the old city (or so I was told, by more than one person, but I just googled and I think the daily bell-ringing is unrelated to the bombing).

ah really, that's sad, but at the very least new beginnings are created out of destruction I always say ;) and that's what progress is all about right!

those buildings kinda reminded me of a building in Dubai that has a similar structure inside of it (two concrete pillars) they're surrounded by a glass moon shaped structure created out of triangles. At first I thought it was a picture of that lol. Either way personally I think it looks amazing :XD: hope they are not just a concrete lump O_o

in any sense, awesome picture!

I was about to write a critique, but I couldn't find anything wrong with this! Gorgeous picture! A sunset over the city, I don't see many of these. I love how the sky colored in a rainbow-like way, and the clouds right over the sun are so reflective and shiny. I also adore the haze, which gives it sort of a lonesome look. I also love the composition with the buildings and cranes. Lovely.

I'm not a photographer... so I'm sorry I couldn't make use of the critique system! >.<

I was very surprised by how the camera captured the colours. I shot it through a plate glass window, I think that affected the camera (in my opinion in a good way).
