The earliest building in the castle complex dates from 1107. The Royal Palace dates from 1540.
A visit to the castle is an amazing experience. The palace was home to Mary Queen of Scots, as a child, and her mother Mary Of Guise, second wife of James V.
I've gone for a very brooding grey photograph here, but actually inside the palace its full of vibrant colour. The Royal Court at the time when the palace was first built was attempting to be at the forefront of Renaissance thinking.
